In the wake of the mammoth floods in Kerala, many individuals and countries are coming forward to help Kerala to recover and rebuild. Notable of all is the aid came from the Middle East countries of Qatar and UAE.  While Qatar offered Rs 35 Crore, UAE has offered a whopping 700 crore rupees to Kerala government.

Kerala has a longstanding relationship with the gulf countries. Thousand of Keralites work and live in the Middle East countries and have played a significant role in building the gulf countries. PM Narendra Modi had his focus on gulf countries with regard to building bilateral ties.

“ As we prepare to celebrate Eid-al-Adha, we do not forget to help our brothers in India”, UAE’s vice president Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum took to Twitter.

While these are news of relief to the Kerala Government who has the herculean task to rebuild a torn state, they might not be able to take these aids. Prevailing policies in India prevents governments from taking financial aids from other countries. In the past during the 2004 tsunami and the 2013 Uttarakhand landslides, countries such as Japan and the US have offered aid that India had to deny owing to policies barrier. The same rules would stand as a hindrance in the case of Kerala Floods too.

Seeking help from fellow nations and countries other than financial aid is what the state should explore now. Also policies would not prevent individuals and charity organizations in extending help.
