The brilliance of the rare blue diamond may be due to boron

The extremely rare and pure blue diamonds are born deep inside Earth’s mantle and get the hue from boron, which may have been carried by subducting ocean plates deep. Researchers used Raman spectroscopy, a noninvasive technique that illuminates diamond inclusions with a laser beam and then measures the wavelengths of light scattered by the inclusions.
