Rice gets extra power to fight bacteria

Researchers at Indian institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad have developed a new variety of improved Samba Mahsuri rice that can resist bacterial blight disease which affects rice crops and is caused by bacteria called Xanthomonas oryzae. It drastically reduces rice productivity. The rice variety is already protected against blight by three genes.
