Scientists say that the Leaning Tower of Pisa has endured earthquakes since 1280 because of the soft foundational soil beneath it. This phenomenon is known as dynamic soil-structure interaction. The tower's height and stiffness combined with the softness of the soil gives it vibrational characteristics which does not resonate with ground motion.
