Anne Lister, who is referred to as the ‘first modern lesbian’ for her string of female lovers, was honoured with a blue plaque at Holy Trinity church after 178 years of her death. The plaque, which celebrates a “gender-nonconforming entrepreneur”, is the first in the UK in recognition of LGBT history. She was a 19th-century pioneer in many fields.
