Lectins are a type of protein which readily binds to cell membranes. However, they are poorly understood nutrients causing researchers to speculate that they can trigger negative responses.  While it is believed there is no harm in consuming lectins in moderate quantities, they should be soaked overnight, fermented or sprouted before it is consumed.
