Getting shorter is one of the indignities of aging. This has something to do with the inner part of cushiony discs between our vertebrae, which are spongy and gelatinous. As we grow older, these discs retain lesser water and settle down, making us shorter, says Dr. Frank Schwab, spine service chief at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
